So we went up to the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine today, which for those of you who don't know is the world's largest man made excavation, so deep that the Empire State Building stacked twice wouldn't stretch from top to bottom.
I'm not really the environmentalist type but I found this thing more disturbing than anything else. I know that the laptop I am currently using requires copper, as well as the electric wiring that powers it, and at the same time I kept thinking - uh, is it really a good idea to replace a mountain with a giant hole in the ground surrounded by rubble? Kind of staggering to think about what mankind is capable of ... for better or worse.
